Mother’s Day is quickly approaching, and with that comes the task of finding that PERFECT way to show the Moms in your life how much they mean to you.  And for many, it’s not such a simple task.

After all, moms everywhere tend to put their family first every single day. They don’t think about it. They just do it. And this holiday isn’t just restricted to kids thanking the special woman in their life. We all know a mom, whether it is a relative or friend, who would love the extra attention on this special day.

Here are some things you can do to shower a little extra love and affection to a mom on Mother’s Day.

Mother’s Day Idea #1: Moms of Small Kids

What do moms of small kids love most of all? You know it – their children’s art work. Whether it is a splatter of paint on a scrap of paper, a colorful scrawl of crayons or a stick-figure drawing of mom and dad, moms love to display these with pride and even frame their kids’ creations.

The best way to honor moms of small kids is to get their kids to create a piece of art especially for mom. You know she’ll love it! The only problem she is likely to have is finding some place to display one more piece of her child’s art but that’s one problem that she would actually love to handle.

Mother’s Day Idea #2: Moms of Teenagers

Living with a teenager can be difficult. Teenagers want to gain more independence than they may be able to handle, and this can often manifest as rebelliousness. Do you know a mom whose teenagers have been driving her up the wall of late? Maybe you could talk them into taking this one day to show mom that they really do appreciate everything she has done for them even if they don’t show it every day. What they can help with may seem obvious to us but most teenagers could do with a little nudge in the right direction.

One fun idea that every teenager is sure to love would be to cook mom’s favorite dish, while you volunteer to bring the dessert. If the teenager is an only child, you could gift mom a dinner for two so mom and her kid can spend some quality time together while also having a fun night out.

Mother’s Day Idea #3: Empty Nest Moms

First, we would like to express our congratulations to the empty nester mom. She has recently completed one of the hardest jobs ever – raising a baby into an independent young adult. The path to get to this point can be riddled with challenges, but she’s done it!

For most moms, being an “empty nester” can be difficult, especially if they have only one child or their youngest child has moved out of the house, either at college or out on their own into adulthood. Moms are used to all that hustle and bustle, and when suddenly it stops, this feeling can be overwhelming, and sometimes even depressing. The feeling of loss can be especially poignant on Mother’s Day.

An empty nester mom is sure to enjoy having some company on this special day. Even just dropping in for a few minutes with a bouquet of flowers and a box of chocolates is sure to brighten her day. If you have some more time, keep the day free and spend it with her. Maybe book a day at the movies or doing something special she loves. If you are too far to visit personally, you can still surprise her with an appointment for a day of pampering at her favorite spa.

Mother’s Day Idea #4: Moms Who Are No Longer with Us

For some, Mother’s Day is a sad occasion, because their mom may not be here anymore. You can be a comfort to this mom’s kids by visiting them and accompanying them to the grave site or help them with volunteering at their mom’s favorite charity in memory of what she cared about when she was still here. If the kids are very young, preparing one of Mom’s favorite meals to share with the kids can help ease the pain of not having her there on this day.

Mother’s Day Idea #5: Senior Moms

For senior moms whose kids live far away from home, nothing is could bring more joy than spending the day with family and friends. If mom is independent and lives at home,  there are plenty of little things you can do to make the day extra special – cook her dinner, bake a cake, buy plenty of fresh flowers and place them everywhere, and most important of all, spend time helping her out with whatever chores she needs done but cannot do by herself.

Mother’s Day Idea #6: Join The Fun at Their Community!

Not all senior moms live independently in their own home. There are many seniors who choose to live in a senior oriented community for a variety of reasons, whether they simply want a worry-free lifestyle in independent living or need some additional assistance on a daily basis provided in an assisted living community.  If that special mom in your life lives in a senior living community, she’s in for a treat just by living in a senior-oriented community!

Senior focused communities often hold special events and activities for all holidays including Mother’s Day. On Mother’s Day, they pull out all the stops to celebrate all the moms in the community by encouraging visitors, family, friends, and even pets to visit the residents. There is often a special brunch or luncheon, cake, photos being taken, and maybe even a special Mother’s Day performance.

What better way to show you care than spending time with them on this special day in their home. If you’d like to know what the senior living community is doing for the special day, give them a call or follow their social media pages to stay up to date on activities.

And remember, senior living communities don’t just celebrate Mother’s Day or holidays. They honor all residents of their facility each and every day by delivering quality services and delicious dining, and personalized care 24/7 to those who need it.
